Dancing at Lughnasa - Feb. 23

Home > Theatre Department Events > Dancing at Lughnasa - Feb. 23

Event Information

In 1936, in the small Irish town of Ballybeg, the five Mundy sisters do what is necessary to sustain their way of life. At the time of the festival of Lughnasa, which celebrates the pagan god of the harvest, their spare existence is interrupted by music, dancing, and the hope of romance. Brian Friel's masterpiece examines the familial relationships, connections to the past, and the inevitable push to the future that leaves these women longing for a place in a new world, just as they rediscover theri connection to an ancient one. Winner of the 1992 Tony Award for Best Play, the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Broadway Play, and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play, Dancing at Lughnasa is a haunting tribute to the spirit and valor of the past, and to a land where there are "no tears without laughter, and no laughter without tear..."
